Though some managers actually start their career abroad almost as hastily as this, understanding and adjusting to the new environment will take place at another tempo. Rapid acquisition of new technical skills and understanding of new evidence is often hampered by resistance to change or by the need to adjust to this new environment.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the one hand, leaving one\u2019s country can contribute to personal and professional development, a way to broaden your vision of life as well as your family\u2019s. On the other hand, leaving one\u2019s country may also be regarded as a very destabilizing situation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some people may be very supportive and their positive arguments make you more confident in the decision whereas arguments against your departure often express mistrust, sadness or fear. These are very discouraging signs at a moment you greatly need support to go through this period with serenity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Change acceptance is also very much linked to your national culture, your education, your motivations and values, your life and professional experience.<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

TIPS FOR EFFICIENT PREPARATION<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 <\/strong>Get support from people with a positive state of mind but accept not every one adheres to your project. Leaving one\u2019s country never leaves people indifferent moreover if your native country is very much attached to long term stability and is globally reluctant to change.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Etablissez un planning et listez les diff\u00e9rentes t\u00e2ches dans les diff\u00e9rents domaines (par ex. : l\u2019\u00e9cole, le travail, le d\u00e9m\u00e9nagement, la maison, etc.) afin d\u2019\u00e9viter d\u2019\u00eatre pris de court et de vous retrouver mis sous pression (ce qui sera de toute fa\u00e7on le cas une fois sur place \u2026)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Make sure you do not run away from your country because this state of mind is negative and the boomerang effect way be more powerful after some time. Put your departure into perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/strong>Les trois premiers mois qui suivent votre arriv\u00e9e dans le nouveau pays requi\u00e8rent une attitude positive pour vous aider \u00e0 tenir le coup et prendre vos marques pendant cette p\u00e9riode \u00e9puisante.  Le changement en cours se meut alors en un processus cr\u00e9atif : votre \u00e9nergie se concentre pleinement sur l\u2019apprentissage, la compr\u00e9hension et l\u2019int\u00e9gration dans le nouvel environnement. Il y a tant de nouveaux visages, de choses \u00e0 d\u00e9couvrir, prendre ses marques dans un nouveau lieu constitue une activit\u00e9 tr\u00e8s \u00e9nergivore.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cependant, entre trois \u00e0 six mois apr\u00e8s votre arriv\u00e9e, l\u2019enthousiasme li\u00e9 au d\u00e9m\u00e9nagement et \u00e0 l\u2019installation est retomb\u00e9, la d\u00e9couverte de tous les aspects li\u00e9s \u00e0 votre nouvelle vie fait alors place \u00e0 une p\u00e9riode plus \u00ab d\u00e9pressive \u00bb. Vous vous sentez fatigu\u00e9, en mal d\u2019\u00e9nergie, d\u00e9courag\u00e9 et m\u00eame parfois vous ressentez une forme d\u2019agressivit\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard des autochtones. Le changement traverse un stade de r\u00e9gression et votre manque d\u2019\u00e9nergie positive laisse la porte ouverte \u00e0 la remise en question de vos choix ; il est temps de faire une pause et de prendre distance par rapport au quotidien. TIPS FOR SUSTAINING CREATIVITY <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 <\/strong>Prenez du temps pour vous reposer et socialiser car le rythme de travail des expatri\u00e9s est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement tr\u00e8s intense, ils travaillent souvent beaucoup. Vous aurez ainsi besoin de garder la t\u00eate hors de l\u2019eau pour y puiser de l\u2019air frais. Chacun \u00e0 sa mani\u00e8re : sport, r\u00e9unions entre amis, visites du pays, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Do not obligatory urge for making new friends if it is to consider them as a way to help you survive in a new modern jungle. But more experienced expats in the country can be really helpful to guide you in everyday life thanks to their practical knowledge and their understanding of local mentalities, expatriate associations are also very used to welcoming newcomers. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Free your mind and accept cultural shock, give time to time, time to understand, time to adjust, time to communicate properly with local people and time to perform. Ask for appropriate training to your company as the more adapted to the environment and better trained you are, the more stable, motivated, effective you will be.<\/span><\/p>\n

Plus le pays d\u2019origine et le pays d\u2019accueil sont distants culturellement, plus grand sera le choc culturel !<\/span><\/p>\n

SEARCHING FOR ACCOMMODATION <\/strong><\/p>\n

Some companies have already dealt with it before the expatriate\u2019s arrival in the foreign country. Others grant an annual budget to their expatriates for accommodation (renting, consumptions and furnishing included) and leave them search for the flat or house which best suits them. It depends on the company policy and on the real estate market of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

TAKING OFFICE<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the corporate culture, many companies become more aware of the necessity to develop the consciousness of their expatriates to multicultural relationships and their competences in this field, <\/span>who is who and how to do with whom.<\/em> Efficient cultural integration is one of the key factors of success for expat Management in their assignments abroad.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, it is still very current to notice that expat managers receive trainings mainly informing them about the technical and factual aspects (hard skills) of the job which HR Management think expat managers need to know most to accomplish their future project efficiently. They hence concentrate more on <\/span>what goals, how to reach them, what technical tools, how much will it cost and what deadline<\/em> (par ex. : gestion du syst\u00e8me IT, mod\u00e8le de gestion int\u00e9gr\u00e9e, gestion de projet, \u2026). <\/span><\/p>\n

COMING INTO CONTACT WITH LOCAL STAFF<\/strong><\/p>\n

Establishing positive relationships as from the first days is a very good starting point as people keep in mind the first impression you leave them. Building confidence will then set the foundations for effecient work with the local or multicultural team.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ne jamais oublier qu\u2019un expatri\u00e9 est un \u00e9tranger dans le pays d\u2019accueil! Vous pouvez, par exemple, leur apporter vos comp\u00e9tences sp\u00e9cifiques utiles pour former du personnel local, ils vous montreront de leur c\u00f4t\u00e9 leur \u00ab expertise \u00bb par le fait qu\u2019ils sont parfaitement adapt\u00e9s \u00e0 leur environnement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both parts need to learn from each other and collaborate to create synergy. A change of attitude is at stake for the ones who care for building up positive and satisfactory relationships. More distant the expatriate\u2019s culture (and the company\u2019s) is from the culture of the host country, the longer and harder bridging both communication channels may be. Of course, it depends on everyone\u2019s state of mind and it is a very personal attitude.<\/span><\/p>\n

RESIDENCE AND WORK PERMIT<\/strong><\/p>\n

Most multinational companies have a department in charge for the expatriates to introduce the request for residence and work permit\/visa at the Embassy of the foreign country before the expatriate\u2019s departure. This can take some time (minimum two weeks). It also happens that the expatriate deals himself\/herself with this procedure. <\/span><\/p>\n

SCHOOL INTEGRATION <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 <\/strong>Though most international schools are used to hosting students from everywhere in the world and at all times in the school year, sociability and willingness to adapt however remain key factors for children to integrate in their new school.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Another challenge they often have to face is the teaching language. Children need their parents\u2019support specially in the first months.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Les mamans \u00e0 l\u2019expatriation peuvent souvent consacrer plus de temps que les papas par le simple fait que la plupart des femmes expatri\u00e9es travaillent souvent moins ou pas du tout et les femmes managers sont moins souvent envoy\u00e9es pour des missions de longue dur\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tranger que leurs coll\u00e8gues masculins. Cela r\u00e9side en partie dans le fait que les femmes occupant des positions manag\u00e9riales sont souvent moins bien accept\u00e9es par le personnel local dans les pays \u00e9mergents.  <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Create adhesion among the family is not a matter of fact as children, more noticeable when they turn teenagers, feel they are in one way or another submitted to their parents\u2019 decision and will react more or less vividly. Parents have to remain open and listen to them at a turning point of their personal development. Many circumstances can influence their reactions and parents are challenged to make them integrate the project as their own, everyone can develop differently and at a different rythm. However, expatriating with young children is more often easier than with older ones with the condition of good medical care services.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Many parents living in developing countries decide to send their teenagers to a boarding school abroad or in their home country for a better academic preparation. But their choice still depends on the schools available in the host country and on the type of education parents think best for their children. <\/span><\/p>\n

SOCIALIZING <\/strong><\/p>\n

Les expatri\u00e9s appr\u00e9cient souvent de rencontrer des compatriotes au sein d\u2019associations d\u2019expatri\u00e9s, mais aussi des expatri\u00e9s des quatre coins du globe. Les bonnes raisons de se rencontrer ne manquent pas: sport, r\u00e9ceptions, caf\u00e9-rencontres, groupes de volontaires engag\u00e9s dans des projets humanitaires, et partage d\u2019exp\u00e9riences de vie. Les nationalit\u00e9s rencontr\u00e9es d\u00e9pendent des int\u00e9r\u00eats \u00e9conomiques que les entreprises ont dans le pays, des ressources naturelles exploitables mais aussi de l\u2019histoire du pays (par ex. : ancienne colonie, \u2026).<\/span><\/p>\n

As for children, sociability, curiosity and willingness to adapt are key factors to adapt in the new environment, as learning one of the national languages can help a great deal to interact with local people. <\/span><\/p>\n

Volunteering is also an excellent way to socialize with local and expat people sharing common values.<\/span><\/p>\n

In developing countries, some may sometimes feel quite hard to create true relationships with local people as cultural barries are often more important, preconceived ideas and mutual misunderstanding may also refrain both communities from getting into contact with each other.<\/span><\/p>\n

Expats feel the necessity to make their stay comfortable and need to feel reassured. You may be more at your ease to share your feelings with peers closer to your culture and who are likely to understand you better.<\/span><\/p>\n

LIVING IN THE COUNTRY<\/strong><\/p>\n

Des expatri\u00e9s plus habitu\u00e9s au pays vous renseigneront sur les meilleurs supermarch\u00e9s, les drogueries, les cliniques et les m\u00e9decins et des tas d\u2019autres informations pratiques relatives \u00e0 la vie quotidienne sur place. En fonction du niveau de d\u00e9veloppement \u00e9conomique et social du pays, l\u2019entreprise fournira des informations relatives aux centres de soins et cliniques priv\u00e9es auxquels elle peut affilier ses expatri\u00e9s.<\/span><\/p>\n

N\u00e9anmoins, d\u00e9couvrir un pays ne s\u2019apparente pas uniquement \u00e0 g\u00e9rer le quotidien : se connecter \u00e0 la presse et aux m\u00e9dias locaux, effectuer des visites touristiques, visiter des march\u00e9s locaux (parfois se faire accompagner), des mus\u00e9es, des galeries d\u2019art, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

COMFORT WITHOUT BEING AT HOME<\/strong><\/p>\n

Living abroad requires time and patience. Putting your view of life into perspective, you may do things you would never do in your own country, you may even behave differently as you need to adapt to a different context. <\/span><\/p>\n

Temperament, values, education and life experience influence our ability to integrate more easily to a country and less in another and as an expatriate, you are facing this reality much more harshly than in your home land. Under rather similar living and working circumstances, some expatriates will love a country and others will hate. Therefore, our preferences in the way we behave, think and act greatly condition our ability to accept of some cultural differences and not others. In the same way, our values determine our motivations.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
